Description
Species: Whiteia woodwardi
Age: lower Triassic
Locality: Madagascar
Measurements: c. 15.8 cm long
Weight: 0.55 kg
Although displaying a few eye-distracting cracks, this fine coelacanth shows beautiful colours and a most complete caudal fin. As usual with fossils from the lower Triassic of northern Madagascar, the specimen consists of the external moulds of the left and right flanks of the fish, preserved in a calcareous concretion. Some of the cracks were filled.
